Lady Gaga Goes Armani

Lady Gaga Goes Armani

Here are some exciting news: Giorgio Armani is designing Lady Gaga’s wardrobe for her Born This Way Ball tour which kicks off in Seoul on April 27th. It is not the designer’s first time collaborating with Lady Gaga.

Remember her series of outfits specially designed for her that she wore on the occasion of the 2010 Grammy Awards ceremony, followed by a number of red carpet events.

“Collaborating with Lady Gaga is always an exciting experience for me. I admire the way she uses fashion as a scenic element and as a means to build a character,” says Giorgio Armani. “She is an artist of many talents and great intelligence. Creating stage costumes for her is a stimulating and creative exercise.”

The custom Giorgio Armani wardrobe created for Lady Gaga is characterized by extreme forms and futuristic materialslatex, metal, studs, PVC – crafted with couture savoir faire. Each outfit is completed with detailed, other-worldly accessories.
Enjoy your sneak preview of Armani’s amazing theatrical sketches:

look 01

The first design includes a black bodice made of tubular PVC elements connected with metal studs, with mirrored metal inserts to define a curvaceous design. The ensemble is highlighted by a matching headpiece, robotic thigh-high boots, and exaggerated gloves ending in mirrored nails.

look 02

Another look is created via a shiny black grid-patterned PVC bodice with matching headpiece and embroidered ankle boots.  Highlights include shoulders outlined by a play of sharp spikes, black Swarovski jet crystals and flowing fringe, creating a moving architecture.

look 03

On the third black bodice, transparent Plexiglas, black crystals and luminous studs create a Cubist composition of abstract guitars. The matching headpiece follows in the shape of a keyboard; the boots are black vinyl.

look 04The final design is a long tunic with leg-o-mutton sleeves made of skin-toned latex. Luminous PVC elements create flashes of synthetic light inside the garment. The same avant garde lighting is featured on the triangle decorating the chest, on the headpiece, and on the platform of the matching latex ankle boots.

This is definitely not a “Bad Romance” between Lady Gaga and Giorgio Armani!

A Little Chat with Donatella Versace

IMG_3237

Tomorrow, the Versace for H&M collection will officially hit 300 stores worldwide (in the US on November 19th), so ladies and gentlemen be prepared to line up in the morning.

Last week in NYC, I got the pleasure to meet Donatella Versace and H&M’s creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch who sat down for a chat with Tim Blanks, Style.com’s editor-at-large, at the top floor of the Dream Downtown hotel.

Find out a little bit more about the collection and which one is Donatella’s favourite look. Believe it or not…Donatella even revealed that she likes shopping at H&M.

What does this collaboration mean to you?

D.V.: It was very emotional for me to go through the archives to explore all the looks that Gianni created. It is an amazing way to reach the younger crowd. I am working closely with Lady Gaga or Nicki Menaj. It is great to collaborate with such dedicated artists who have so many followers. Gianni would be so proud to see his clothes worn by younger kids. This is an homage to Gianni.
I was scared to take over the reins from him when he died. I had to gain the credibility from the rest of the world.

Looking at your own shows, you are reenergized creatively. You are working with the Fringe London, Lady Gaga? Calling this a Versace moment, why do you think this was all coming together now?

D.V.: For me it is a fantasic moment. I talk and follow young designers. I am very interested in them and they are very interested in me. A house like Versace has a lot of history they can profit from but I am learning a lot, too. I am open to different opinions. Fashion is every day an exam. After all those years of minimalism, Versace and its luxury are back!

Margareta, did you feel a Versace moment as well?

M.v.d.B.: Yes, definitely. This is a different collaboration from what we did before with all those colours and prints, leather and studs. The essence of the house Versace was truly there.

Donatella, were you surprised when you went through your archives even that you know them well?

D.V.: I was amazed to see how Gianni did everything – I am sorry to say – before everybody else. I see a lot of homage to Versace today as for example young designer Riccardo Tisci did for the Givenchy F/W 2011 collection (looking at me as I was wearing a dress from this collection). But this is enough now. It is my turn, this is my homage to Versace!

Didn’t you have to make a concession?

D.V.: This was the best thing to work with H&M, there was no concession. There are fantastic people in this company. They said yes to everything, I never got a no. It has been a fantastic liberating moment. Just the amount of sketches surprised the team.
31 looks were asked and I created 43 looks for the runway, from the chokers and the bracelets with the Medusa, flowers from Miami, printed jeans and skirts, leather, the high heels, nothing is missing.

IMG_3263

Margareta, what are the criteria for a collaboration? Isn’t H&M and Versace at two comletely different ends? And how do you get started?

M.v.d.B.: It is very much a feeling that we discuss in-house. If we agree, we go for it. We had the first meeting and talked about the collection. We decided something little. When the second meeting took place with the teams around the products, like buyers, people for the packaging and many others, I expected some sketches but Donatella had everything ready. It was fantastic as we always have a lack of time.

Margareta, you said the time was right for Versace, what do you mean with that?

M.v.d.B.: Fashion should be something that makes you happy. This collaboration is about a dream, to give people the spirit of luxury. We try to make it as close to the brand as possible. Maximalism, colours, prints, everything is back. It is an optimistic upbeat collection even that you see all the bad news in Europe.

Dona1

And how about you, Donatella? What do you think?

D.V.: It is a dream of luxury, for example when you touch the studded leather coat from the Versace for H&M collaboration or the original from the archives, you don’t know which one is the real one.

Donatella & meDonatella Versace with me

What is this collaboration about? Which impact will the collection have on H&M or Versace? Will it change your own work?

D.V.: I had that clear idea what to do, of the look that young people want. Fashion is freedom today. Technology plays a fantastic role and H&M uses it in an amazing way. It is interesting to see how young people put things together and that everything goes.

M.v.d.B.: Fashion is about expressing your individuality. This collaboration is about giving the customers something new and showing that you don’t need a huge budget to look good. We are very professional and have all the knowledge. We included for the first time homewear because it is part of the Versace look, as well as jewelry. I mean there is no Versace collection without jewelry. We have two different cushions, a blanket and many different jewelry pieces.

Which one is your favourite piece in the collection?

D.V.: I have 43 favourite babies.

M.v.d.B.: The studded leather dress and the rings.

________________

If I were you, I would definitely get a piece with the tropical print as this is a huge trend among the upcoming Cruise 2012 collections from the likes of Stella McCartney, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Givenchy.

And don’t forget to enter the contest to win the amazing purple one-of-a-kind Versace for H&M dress! Deadline is tonight! Good luck!

And rumours are out that the next collaboration might be with Tom Ford, OMG!

Vintage Versace printed silk shirts are hotter than ever. The colorful and bold Versace staple is being discovered and sought out by a new generation of pops stars, such as Lady Gaga, and style hipsters. The trend was also evoked in many runway collections these past few seasons as seen at Dolce & Gabbana and Céline among others. In celebration of this renewed appreciation, Versace has re-issued a limited number of classic printed silk shirts. No one can do Versace better than Versace.

Versace re-issued three different women’s styles, which are available now in all Versace boutiques worldwide as well as selected department stores and special boutiques/e-commerce sites for CHF 1100 each. You can shop the silk shirts by clicking here.

Lady Gaga Captured the Runway at Mugler

Mugler_gaga-1

Mugler is back but not with the star designer himself. The brand that was formerly known as Thierry Mugler bowed yesterday in Paris. Nicola Formichetti’s first women’s collection for Mugler F/W 2011 included a famous runway debut: Lady Gaga walked in the very high platform heels much better than any other model. She was truly smoking in both ways, in the literal and the figurative senses.

The clothes were reminiscent of Thierry Mugler’s famous creations, exaggerated, peaked shoulders, alien-like silhouettes and very tight bodysuits. Thinking of the brand’s success in the eighties, it will be interesting to see how the comeback will be going. The biggest fan, Lady Gaga, bought the entire collection in every colour. Seems to be a bright future and if you are interested how Thierry Mugler, who calls himself now Manfred Mugler, looks today, click here.

Haider Ackermann S/S 2011 graces the cover

Haider Ackermann S/S 2011 graces the cover

Lady Gaga is on the cover of US Vogue March 2011, photographed by Mario Testino.

As the March edition is the most important for the S/S collections (the same as September is for F/W), it is no wonder that Gaga dons the must-have looks for the warm season.
So please enjoy the highlights, especially the three sensational McQueen shots. From runway to Gaga, very dramatic and definitely different.

The interview with US Vogue also helps Gaga to promote her new album „Born This Way“: The seventeen-track CD will include such songs as „Hair“, „Bad Kids“, „Americano“, „Government Hooker“, and the second single „Judas“.

Barbie goes Gaga

Isn`t it amazing how fashion, art, music and movies are all connected with each other?! I love to explore those alliances.

So here is the reason why boys should definitely play with dolls. Veik, a 29-year-old from Beijing, lets Barbie go Gaga. Fashion meets Art through his designs. Since his childhood, he has treated the plastic ladies like stars and created many stunning looks all by hand. Fascinated by the phenomenon of Lady Gaga, he captured her role as a fashion leader in every single one of his accurate doll`s outfits.  Aren`t Barbie`s feet cute in the futuristic Alexander McQueen shoes?!

But no need to hurry to the next toy store, his designs are not for sale. Take his work as an inspiration to experiment on your own. I am sure that if you have got kids, they would love an afternoon of arts and crafts for their Barbies.

Avatar Inspired Alexander McQueen S/S 2010

Avatar1

It is weekend time and I wanted to inspire you for a movie night out to see Avatar” in 3D directed by James Cameron. The science fiction epic blockbuster plays in the year 2154 on the distant planet of Pandora and seemed to be the inspiration for Alexander McQueen`s “Plato`s Atlantis” S/S 2010 collection.

Avatar2

The models on the catwalk looked so much like the Na`vi race in the movie. The colours green, brown and later on all shades of blue, the amazing digital prints and reptile patterns, all emerging from the sea were like the designer`s apocalyptic forecast.

Lady Gaga premiered her song “Bad Romance” at the show that was supposed to be live-streamed.  But the site crashed because of all the traffic that emerged after she had tweeted to her millions of fans about her newest release.

Avatar3

I could definitely not think of anyone better than her pulling off the techno and futuristic trends for next summer.  She strutted gorgeously in McQueen`s eccentric shoes (I love them!) that made the fashion world gasp when they appeared on the runway. Those towering platforms are a piece of art, deserving to be displayed. The legendary footwear gave the cybernetic look already a cult status.

Let`s capture the cobbled streets of Zurich in those heels- might be fun… at least for the ones watching us!

LoL, Sandra
