THE Coat of the Season

I am on my way to London with my beloved belted padded hooded shell coat. When it arrived at my doorstep, I was pretty hesitant, but after waiting a few days, I knew this will be THE coat of the season.

Pieter Mulier‘s Alaïa collections are directional but wearable – there’s an art in that balance that only the most skilled designers can achieve. This shell coat has oversized lapels and is padded to enhance the powerful silhouette. The Maison always draws attention to the waist so I am sure to knot the belt.

It arrives in a pouch (how great is this for travelling) and can be folded into a small little piece. Its oversized hood as well as its water-repellent material make it the perfect companion in cold and wet weather. I have never taken an umbrella since then.

Trend F/W 2023: Exaggerated Tapered Jeans

Regardless of the season, fashion’s attraction to denim is resolute. Designer jeans went from oxymoron to fashion fixture in the ‘80s, and this winter season, there is a distinct ’80s mood, and with that comes a looser, taper-leg trouser style.

Personally speaking the piece of the season is this one by Alaïa. Pieter Mulier explored «sculpture through clothing» for the Maison’s F/W 202323 collection, and that’s exactly how I’d describe these jeans. Defined by their exaggerated proportions, they sit high on the waist and have balloon-like tapered legs. The light-blue denim has been stonewashed and faded by hand to give them a worn-in effect.

Below I have rounded up the top denim pairs that are elevating your closet staple this season. Some come with more exaggerated proportions, some with less. It is now up to you to choose which one is your favorite.

My Look: New!

New Alaïa, new denim! I am such a huge fan of Pieter Mulier‘s first collection for Alaïa. Four years after Alaïa’s passing, the Belgian designer, who was Raf Simons right hand before, created a collection with so many amazing pieces that pay homage to Azzedine Alaïa‘s greatest hits, including body-sculpting knitwear, multi-strap corset belts, and hooded silhouettes evocative of Alaïa’s North African roots. As Pieter said, he wanted his first collection for the French house to be «a return to foundations.» I bought many pieces, among them this beautiful denim look that I photographed on the streets of Paris and that you will hopefully like as much as I do.
