Plaid Please!

Fall patterns took a traditional turn with highland tartans and madras checks. Plaid has continued its raison d`être as one of fashion`s favourite fabrics for F/W 2010. But this season is not about the lumberjack shirt, the designers went a little further with plaid dresses and pants, plus the absolute must-have: The kilt-inspired skirt!

If you want to work a touch of heritage-chic into your cold-weather wardrobe, I recommend starting now with those super-cool skirts below. From mini to pencil, from draped to pleated, those versions are catering for all tastes. Update your capsule wardrobe with a piece like that and you are all on for new-season cool. Prices can vary depending on the country you live in.

In case you are worried to look too preppy-back-to-school, juxtapose this classic fabric against something with a bit more edge. I put an outfit together to show you what I mean:
The classic skirt by Chloé works perfectly with a corset top and asymmetrical sweater, both by Alexander Wang. Team with a must-have cape by Stella McCartney and stocking-attached ankle boots by Givenchy and finish off your modern, sexy look with a floppy hat by YSL. This is anything but conservative!

PlaidskirtLike I always say, keep your stuff, there will be a time that you can wear it again! My outfit is completely from previous seasons and looks very up-to-date this fall.

Plaid skirt by Gucci, leather biker jacket by Ralph Lauren Collection, red boots by Prada, bag by Chanel and hat by H&M.

There is always a time for a kilt! And you can spare the underwear…

Sassy Knickers of the Week

Sassy

Remember your first sets of day-of-the week undies when you were a little child? I still have strong memories of being excited to pick out the correct one each morning. I am sure that many of you had the same experience. To relive your girlhood delight, Stella McCartney has these sassy knickers of the week for us adults. Every day is well taken care of with the seven silk-blend briefs with multicoloured floral embroidery that come in a stylish dressing-drawer style box. The set will look adorable in your bedroom boudoir or make a fabulous gift for a fellow fashionista. Available in black, white and light pink.

Get yourself organized! These knickers are a natural winner!

Sweater Dressing

Sweater dressing has been trendy since quite awhile but this winter you can indulge in reminiscences of all those gorgeous and easy looks from the `70s and `80s. Preferably loose-knit and tone on tone, we will enjoy the new comfortable freedom. Wear  your sweater dresses with opaque tights, ankle boots and the must-have accessory: a thin belt around the waist!

Extra long boyish cardigans can also do a similiar job. Stella McCartney has some seriously sexy ones. If you like you can combine them with a wide belt like Sonia Rykiel showed on the runway which will give your outfit more shape and spice it up.

You will be surprised how another oldie out of your closet can look brand new this season if you play a litttle with it. The Chanel way looks so sexy. A belted sweater worn as an ultra-mini dress combined with fur overknee boots.

In case that you just cannot wait for all these gorgeous runway looks to arrive, I have provided a fabulous pre-fall 2010 look for you that is already available:

Wrap up the new season with a leather self-tie belt by Vionnet worn over a loose cashmere knitted dress like the one by Chloé. The goat hair trench coat by Burberry Prorsum would finish off your look with style along with the suede knee-high wedge boots by Guiseppe Zanotti and the sloughy bag by See by Chloé.

Comfortable and übercool in one!

Falling for Mr Porter

One of my favourite online stores Net-à-Porter has started to receive the new pre-fall 2010 collections and I do not want you to miss this. The beginning of the season offers always so many stunning pieces. Here are some of them, already put together in complete outfits. The Burberry Prorsum jackets are divine just as the python prints by Stella McCartney. A belted cardigan is a must-have for next season, why not go for this Fendi one and think leather, leather, leather! The Burberry Prorsum pencil skirt below would be the perfect opportunity. Do you feel the same urge to push the “add to shopping bag” button like I do?!

Natalie Massenet

Natalie Massenet

As it has been a week of announcements, I have another one, this time for my male readers who probably feel a little left behind. Ten years to the day Net-à-Porter was founded and right after its acquisition by Richemont earlier this spring, the online shop`s founder Natalie Massenet and the Net-à-Porter family announced that they are adding a stand-alone menswear luxury retail site to the company, called Mr Porter. It will launch in January 2011 for next spring and will offer the most exclusive service along with style advice.  Brands like Balmain, Burberry, Lanvin, YSL and John Lobb, just to name a few, will make the stressed business man happy shopping from his desk. Or we could order for our men a little pre-selection to enjoy at home. I like it!mrporter.com_

An Exclusive Club of Beauties

NATALIE PORTMANThis week, award-winning actress Natalie Portman was annonced as new face of Christian Dior Parfums. Although no specific mention of any particular perfume has been made yet. It is her first time to collaborate with a cosmetics brand.

My Top Twenty for F/W 2010

Top_Twenty_F:W2010

Et voilà, here is the next season preview. Below you will find the Top 20 runway shows that are in my view the key collections for F/W 2010. Enjoy!

ChanelF:W2010

CHANEL: There is no way you can escape Karl Lagerfeld. The genius surprised with an outstanding play on global warming and the melting of the ice caps. The models literally made a splash on the catwalk in shaggy snow boots with ice-block heels and furry polar bear outfits. A quite outstanding collection as Lagerfeld chose to use fake fur instead of promoting the real thing. Global warming will accelerate as you will see a lot of polar bears in St. Moritz this winter.

Prada_FW2010

PRADA: Miuccia Prada`s unique talent has once more surprised us. The convinced feminist put for the first time the emphasis on the chest. The early 60s inspired collection was an ode to the womanhood. Sexy secretaries with high chignons demonstrated an esthetic perfection on the runway. Well done!

LouisVuittonFW2010

LOUIS VUITTON: What was first defined by Miuccia Prada, was spotted a little later in Paris at Louis Vuitton again. In celebration of womanliness, Marc Jacobs created a curvy silhouette with 50s wasp waists, petticoated skirts and outlined busts.

AlexanderMcQueen_FW2010

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN: Final honours to McQueen`s last works. During the process of preparing this poetic, medieval show, the British designer committed suicide. One last curtain call for his huge talent that showed so well in the tailoring and theatrical aspect of this collection.

BalmainFW2010

BALMAIN: When it comes to Balmain, I cannot be neutral as I am such a big fan of Christophe Decarnin`s work. His designs have been copied a zillion times but nothing can compete with that notoriously expensive collection. This season, he took his inspiration from a baroque rock `n` roll showing to-die-for colourful marabou jackets, sexy frock coats, tight lamé dresses and the return of the over-shoe flared pants that make your legs look sooo long.

Celine_FW2010

CELINE: Phoebe Philo set a benchmark again with her second collection for the French house for breathtaking luxurious minimalism. Refined shapes, supreme quality, very contemporary – in her own words: “Strong, powerful, reduced.” That is what you call style.

StellaMcCartneyF:W2010

STELLA MCCARTNEY: Her show was a paragon of the emerging trend of the season: polished minimalistic chic. A very wearable and feminine collection for modern businesswomen.

GucciFW2010

GUCCI: Frida Giannini seemed to take the same line like Stella McCartney. Her Gucci woman grew up and made a tasteful, very confident appearance not trying too hard. An hommage to the label`s golden 60s and 70s esthetics that I am totally in love with.

BalenciagaFW2010

BALENCIAGA: Nicholas Ghesquière has a futuristic vision of couture showing once more in his artistic masterpieces of graphic, pastel and collaged compositions. The computer-age child creates probably not so user-friendly winter outfits, but this twist on Parisian chic is desperately needed in the world of fashion to push things forward.

GiambattistaValliFW2010

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI: A breeze from the 60s combined with a girlish couture spirit, Valli fascinated with shapes and beautiful silhouettes. In this collection, glamour raised the tone.

LanvinFW2010

LANVIN: The Moroccan born designer of the French house is known for his amazing couture-like creations. This season`s take was all about another, stronger idea of elegance. I love the new sexy contemporary Amazon look created by Alber Elbaz. And you?

BottegaVenetaFW2010

BOTTEGA VENETA: As to me, Bottega Veneta seems to be finally back on track. I had not been a big fan of Tomas Maier`s latest collections for the Italian house. Now, he surprised me with awesome body-conscious (if the word could cross the border of his taste) looks in rich amazing colours like emerald green. Hats off!

Burberry ProrsumFW2010

BURBERRY PRORSUM: This was a brilliant show, globally live-streamed, and a super-clever act in one as you could pre-order the gorgeous outerwear straight from the runway over the internet for three days only. You can`t go wrong this winter with those big-collared shearling jackets and the python thigh high boots. Give three cheers for Christopher Bailey!

AlexanderWangFW2010

ALEXANDER WANG: I love every little bit of Wang`s contemporary nonchalance. A polished street-chic, precise tailoring and stunning new cuts showed his amazing talent on the runway. He deconstructed the gray flannel suit into something completely new. Layering was part of the success story. Keep his name in mind, that guy is a must!

MiuMiuFW2010

MIU MIU: Young, plenty sexy, but still very preppy with a slight air of the 60s, those were the best adjectives for Miu Miu`s runway show. The Twiggy-ish collection with the emphasis on the legs also showed some gorgeous colour combinations. A good season, Mrs Prada!

VersusFW2010

VERSUS: Christopher Kane, Donatella Versace`s protégé, will thrill the young party girls with his bright and sexy second collection for Versus. This was definitely one of the most refreshing shows on the runways honouring the heyday of Gianni Versace himself.

Christopher_kane_FW2010

CHRISTOPHER KANE: Kane`s innovative ideas also showed in his own presentation in London where he managed to make the combination of black leather and floral embroideries look good together. The eccentric slashed sleeves were trendsetting. With good reason, he is one of the most courted of young designers today.

DG_FW2010

D&G: I absolutely adore this après-ski collection. It will be the perfect way of looking stylish in the mountains. The knitwear with snowflake patterns was body-conscious and mixed with fur or chiffon. Only Dolce & Gabbana can transform the winter wardrobe into something breathtakingly sexy. Even the moon boots had high heels, love that!

GivenchyFW2010

GIVENCHY: Riccardo Tisci obviously thought of the ski sport as well while designing his sweaters in snowflake-patterned knits. But he combined them with neoprene skirts deriving from the scuba world. He created an interesting twist without taking it too seriously like D&G.

Roberto_Cavalli_FW2010

ROBERTO CAVALLI: This show was the 40th anniversary of the Italian brand, as strange as it sounds. When Roberto Cavalli started in the 70s with his little shop in St.Tropez, he took a lot of his inspirations from the rich-hippie look. This era was once more the force behind his winter collection. An opulent mixture of folk and bohemian elements combined with animal prints and brocade fabrics. Congrats, Roberto!

I hope that you have liked my little résumé. On the runways there were so many different propositions and multiple references, catering for all tastes. The versatility makes fashion so interesting.
Stay tuned as I will tell you much more about the newest trends and must-haves for F/W 2010.

Feeling Great in Stella McCartney

Feeling Great in Stella

Today I would like to show you some of my favourite looks by Stella McCartney for this summer. As you might already know, I am a very big fan of the British designer. The daughter of Paul McCartney designs clothes for modern confident women. They look stylish, feminine but are also very comfortable and work through day and night.  A lifelong vegetarian, Stella doesn`t manufacture anything in leather or fur. She uses a lot of eco-friendly and organic materials. The soles of her shoes have a stamp saying: “Suitable for vegetarians“.
Could becoming an environmentalist be more in vogue?

Below you will find my own selection. For further enquiries and store locations, please visit Stella`s homepage. For my Zurich based readers, I recommend a shopping trip to Salvatore Schito (In Gassen 14, 8001 Zürich). The store carries a lovely selection of her designs for this summer. A wide range of her accessories can also be found at Lovers Lane.

Just for your information: The prefix “vintage” should only indicate that those pieces are from previous seasons. You might be lucky and find some of them still at www.yoox.com or www.theoutnet.com.
Get inspired!

Christie’s Green Auction

GreenAuction

On April 22nd, 2010 Christie`s will be honouring the 40th annual celebration of Earth Day to raise awareness and funds for our planet with their inaugural Green Auction. In case you are thinking this will only be a bash for Birkenstock-lovers, you are completely mistaken. In the 21th century, the green movement can go well together with the luxury lifestyle. The fashion industry has united with the art, philantrophy, finance and celebrity worlds to make “A Bid to Save the Earth”. The auction boasts several unique “once-in-a-lifetime” fashion-themed lots including for example a custom-made scent by Nina Ricci or jewellery by Harry Winston.
Please find below my very own favourites:

Green_Auction_David_laChapelle

The Rape of Africa”, that will be auctioned off, is the first official art piece by David LaChapelle not shot for a magazine. The famous fashion photographer got his inspiration from Botticelli`s Venus and Mars painting. In his work, Naomi Campbell is the African Venus showing many of the horrors endured by the Africans including diamond mining.
I am a big fan of LaChapelle`s work in general. What seems truly interesting to me is that he is obviously attacking his colleague Damien Hirst. Hirst`s famous diamond skull is laying at the feet of the child to the right and is definitely reduced a symbol of cruelty. The catalogue has been published by the Alex Daniels-Reflex Gallery.

Green_Auction_Vea_Wang

You can buy a lunch with Vera Wang at the famous Mercer Kitchen restaurant in NYC and get a $10.000 credit to her flagship store. Might be a good idea for bridal shoppers.

Green_Auction_Stella_mcCartney

If you get the following lot, your first fitting for “His and Hers” bespoke suits made of sustainable fabric will be by the queen of ecological chic herself: Stella McCartney.

Green_Auction_gucci

I love the “Forever Now” package including a vintage 1960`s Bamboo Bag from Gucci`s archive in Florence, and a New Bamboo bag designed and customized by Creative Director Frida Giannini exclusively for the Christie`s Green Auction, in addition to two tickets to the women`s runway show in Milan, and backstage access to meet the designer herself.

Green_Auction_Armani

Last but not least, Giorgio Armani is giving a glamorous evening outfit to accompany the “Los Angeles Oscars experience”, complete with tickets to the Vanity-Fair-After-Party.

To me, the Green movement is a wonderful idea. The silent auction starts on April 8th and goes until May 6th. Details on how to participate in the silent auction or how to donate, volunteer and act can be found at “A Bid to Save the Earth”. The live auction will be on April 22nd in New York at Christie`s Rockefeller Center.

Lady in Red

Red Dress Stella

StellaRedDress

StellaRedDress1

Go bold at cocktail hour with a red statement dress. Everything floral, like prints or applications, is essential this summer. My winner is this bright-red strapless silk mini dress with pleats and oversized flowery ruffles by Stella McCartney. This show-stopping runway style deserves center stage; slip on some gorgeous sandals (mine are the Fendi ones from the show) and keep the accessories simple.

Red Garden H&M

If you don`t want to spend so much on such an eyecatching dress that everybody will remember you in, the smocked version from the H&M Garden Collection in organic cotton with a floral pattern is a great choice. The price (£29.99, $39.95, €39.95) is very attractive and like that you can`t go wrong.

To the Ladies in Red!

The Green Mile

Green1

Green comes in all shades this summer. Due to the military trend on the runways, camouflage prints and olive colours are among the must-haves. In addition floral patterns were seen everywhere along with soft pastel peppermint tones. Here are some of my suggestions to get the look right. Start mixing different shades and add some flower accessories like the cute Vivienne Westwood bag or Oscar de la Renta headband above.

Green2

A great entrance makes the combination of camouflage and animal print. A military jacket like Balmain’s stunning interpretation here is the absolute It-piece this season along with Stella McCartney‘s camouflage print dress.

Green3

Mint green is always lovely in union with different water colours like turquoise for example. Do the unexpected and add a bold accessory to get that twist that is so hard to copy.
My preferred choice is yellow as it works great with all sorts of green.

Happy Saint Patrick`s day to my Irish readers!

LoL, Sandra
